Scooting Around
No, I can’t crawl yet. But I have figured out how to get around by pushing myself backwards. While this does get me somewhat mobile it does have its disadvantages. Especially when one accidentally pushes ones self under various cabinets. And since I can only move backwards that would mean that I am now stuck. Never fear, a few screams and Mommy comes to the rescue. She thinks its quite funny and I might have to agree.

Boston
Given her father is a super runner, Kayla had the opportunity to visit Boston for the 114th running of the Boston Marathon. However, the race wasn’t the only attraction here so we had lots to see. First stop was the top of the Prudential Building to get a bird’s eye view of everything. Luckily, Kayla had many handlers so she never tired of getting passed around. Hey, Nana!
On race day, Kayla had a front row seat for all the action!
The day after the race, we toured historical sites of Boston. Since Kayla was more interested in other things, I spent a lot of time watching her outside and staying off my feet while others did the tourist stuff.
We hiked along the Freedom Trail. Kayla was ready to crawl the whole thing but we probably would still be there. I am trying to get her to walk but she isn’t so sure on the one foot in front of the other part yet.
We stopped by Bunker Hill near the end of our tour. Here are the girls with our traveling companions. It was great having them along for the ride in Boston!

Shopping with Grandma
If Grandma Hakes is in town that means shopping! SInce neither me nor my girls are big shoppers they decided to turn the event into nap time.

My First Babysitter
Kayla had her first babysitter! This means that she had to detach from her mother for the first extended period of time since…ever. It went well for a while but by the end of the night, Grandma couldn’t figure out how to get Kayla to keep from crying. We got the call and had to get home for the rescue. When we arrived, Kayla quieted down and acted like nothing wrong. Guess that technique works pretty good to get your mom back.

Old School
We rented a stroller and they gave us this bucket on wheels. She actually liked it quite a bit!

Mac-n-Cheese
My sister Reagan took me to her favorite spot Noodles & Company. Mom decided I was big enough to try some of Reagans’ favorite mac-n-cheese. It was good for some playing but not much got eaten. For now I think I prefer the plain noodles. I’m sure in time.

Oahu 2010
We are back home after 3 plane flights. The girls all did great on the trip! Here is a slideshow of all the photos — with some you haven’t seen.
Planning for Spring Break 2011 started already…wonder where to next!

Oahu - Day 7
I am on a boat! Asleep…but it still counts! While eating our lunch on the boat, a big 30+ person party of elderly Japanese tourists all in matching orange hats started making a fuss over Kayla. They took her from Kim at one point and started passing her around and taking photos with her. As if she was the princess baby or something. After they gave her back, they asked for our address so they could send us photos and such. It was kind of odd but we enjoyed watching it. I never got out my camera because there were 30+ Nikons firing rapidly.
Back to the beach in the late afternoon for our last playtime before heading out tomorrow. Mom wanted a picture of my cute dress.
Looking at things upside down is entertaining to Kayla. Try it sometime.
Ah, back in my yellow boat. This time in calmer waters. Hey, lady, push me around or something. Make yourself useful.
Hey, ladies, gather around me for our last photo op!
Kayla had a great time in Hawaii and Kim declared her a beach baby! Tomorrow Kayla will spend the day sitting on the plane for 8 hours mostly in Mom’s arms. Life is not too bad so far at only 8 months into it.

Oahu - Day 6
We decided to head back to our favorite beach spot for one last long full day there. We rented our usual spot again. Minutes into the stay, Kayla laid claim to chair #1 for her siesta by the ocean.
That nap was so good she slept right through a huge crap that leaked out of her diaper. We cleaned her up and then stuck her in the big pool to wash off. Then it was time to play with sisters on the beach. Kayla enjoyed sitting there while the waves rushed in on her. Brave baby.
Kim was lamenting going home so I said I would send Kayla home the long way. So I put her in a tube and set her afloat. I hope she makes it to the mainland!
And she carried this torpedo with her in hand in case anybody wanted to mess with her on the open seas!
That plan was foiled by the waves. And apparently Kayla was learning how to kick. Oh, that’s what these things are for!
When they learned of the plan, these two cute lifeguards saved the baby!
After being denied the opportunity to be set out to sea, Kayla became the Sand Monster and destroyed Reagan’s volcano sand castle which really didn’t go over well. But the Monster destroys what the Monster wants.
Monster! Do not eat the tools!
Oh well. Here is a look at the beach time with waves and baby.

Oahu - Day 5
We spent the day up on the North Shore of Oahu. It was rainy and the car ride put Kayla right to sleep. Good rest day for her. Later, we hiked into Waimea Valley for a swim and a foliage tour. Here is a group shot of Kayla’s crew!
I kept the baby dry by wrapping her in plastic with me. No suffocation occurred as I had her head in the arm hole.
Not much else to report this day. Maybe a little tidbit that Kayla really likes “people food” at meals. She wants to get her hands on some bread, crackers, Cheerios, or whatever she can find. She really wants to feed herself now during this trip. That good. Start pooping in a toilet next and we will really be getting somewhere kid!

Oahu - Day 4
After a good review the other day, we headed back down to Kuhio Beach Park for more sun and surf. We rented a set of chair and an umbrella again to setup a fort for baby.
You gotta watch her every second now. She is on her back. Then on her belly. Then rolling towards the edge of whatever she is on. But she always looks cute doing it.
That evening we had a big outing — a luau! Kayla got a front row seat for all the action. She enjoyed the show, especially the fire!

Oahu - Day 3
Hanauma Bay is a classic destination on Oahu. So we headed over there for the day.
Kayla spent most of the day on shore asleep while Kim and I took turns snorkeling with the older kids. I did a good job making forts all day to keep the hot hot sun off the baby for the several hours we spent out there on the beach. All in all, a good cooperative traveling baby!

Oahu - Day 2
Kayla always is a sucker for Mom but her sisters are pretty cool too. She enjoys when they give her attention or pretend she is older like they are and she can hang out with them. Here is the crew in the morning after waking up.
Back to the beach! We moved down to the public beach today and decided to rent an umbrella and chairs. Why build a baby fort when you can rent one? Kim and I took turns with Kayla as she napped and played. Being up off the ground helped cut down on her diet of sand today. Hope she doesn’t go hungry!
I must admit, its hard for me to relax. But when you have a baby and your job is to sit there while she sleeps, it is helpful to have a great view of the ocean!
After a nice nap, she was ready for Mom to take her out into the ocean!
All the big kids are riding boogie boards so Kayla took her turn.
That was so tiring. How about we just do more of that stand and watch the waves stuff?
How about some live action?
