This weekend was the famed Leadville Boom Days Celebration. This event bring all your street vendors and funny events to entertain the folk of Leadville. Its a kid favorite. As always there was the train ride through Main Street Leadville.
But the event of the year had to be the Burro Race. What’s that you say? It where crazy men and women sign up to race up the hills of Leadville…with a Burro. Daddy’s friend George is a Champion Burro racer and would be in contention to win this year. So we decided to all go out in support of George and “Speedy Jack” to see first hand what this is all about. The race starts right downtown to lots of cheers.
Right away they cut north of town and start the climbs. We drove up in the Hummer to get some pics and cheer on the racers. Right away you could see the true burro whisperers. Some were moving pretty good. While most were stopped frustrated on the side of the road trying to convince their burro to move.
We found a hilltop to stop on and waited for the runners. Kayla spent the time roaming around the mine fields and enjoying the wildflowers. She had to point out every color flower she could find.
Here’s George and Speedy Jack in the lead!
For the girls the best part of the race was the end by far. Not because it was over. But, because they got their very own meet and greet with winner “Speedy Jack.” This included giving him snacks and water.
And lots of pats…
By the end they were all asking for a burro of their own. I cant blame them with a face like this.
